Every year the ministry of foreign affairs celebrates the relations with one of its partner countries. In 2013, the theme of these celebrations will be the successful cooperation with Russia, in the areas of trade and culture. Meanwhile in Russia, human rights are under threat. Freedom of speech and press are limited and activists and journalists are being imprisoned and intimidated.
During this evening a panel of experts will discuss recent developments and the current state of affairs. What are the cause...s of human rights violations in Russia? What are dissenting Russians doing against the situation? And what can NGO's, our government, or we do to encourage democracy and respect for human rights? The speakers will share the knowledge they gained working in the fields of journalism, academia and human rights. A representative of the Russian embassy will share the vision of the Russian government and talk about initiatives it's taking to improve human rights.
Speakers: Yasmin Alhafaji (Amnesty International), Max Bader (Russian Studies, UvA), Alexander Fedorinov (first secretary, Russian embassy), Henk Hulshof (Amnesty International), Hans Loos (journalist working in Russia).
