Breaking the Silence: Yehuda Shaul about Israel-Palestina
It's not easy being a whistleblower, especially as former commander of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). This didn't stop Yehuda Shaul and his unit from speaking out about their experiences in the Palestinian territories. In the spring of 2004, Shaul and his comrades organized a photo-exhibition in Tel Aviv with photos of their service for the IDF in Hebron. Their exhibition caused a wave of international media attention. Most Israeli responses were condemning, but at the same time Shaul and his friends were an inspiration for other veterans to speak out.
Breaking the Silence was founded in the aftermath of the exhibition. Yehuda Shaul is co-founder of the organization, which up till today collected around a thousand testimonies from ex-combatants. Breaking the Silence published a book in 2013, summarizing the soldiers' experiences. "Our Harsh Logic: Israeli Soldiers' Testimonies from the Occupied Territories" was widely praised in international press. The New York Review of Books wrote: 'Our Harsh Logic is one of the most essential books on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict of this era'.
Currently, Yehuda Shaul is one of the most well known Israeli activists for the Palestinian cause. He will make a short visit to the Netherlands in September. On Monday September 15, Shaul will visit the Jonge Democraten Utrecht (Young Democrats Utrecht, a social-liberal youth organisation), to tell about his experiences in the IDF, about the split city of Hebron, about Breaking the Silence and responses he got from the Israeli public. The future of the region in a more general sence will be discussed as well, and there is room for questions and discussion. Don't miss this event!
