The Future of Syria Public brainstorm on rebuilding a war-torn nation
Although the development of the war in Syria is uncertain, it is crucial for Syrians as well as the international community to envision a future which will secure justice, peace and security. It is a complex war that pushed millions of refugees out of the country, profoundly destabilized the entire region and created a geopolitical standoff between the great powers.
As the main battles seems to have ended, this is a moment to evaluate and reflect on what kind of Syria will rise from the ashes. And especially ask ourselves: what kind of Syria do we want and how can the Syrian diaspora positively influence the rebuilding process so that democracy and freedom will have a chance?
During the morning we will have high-level speakers and we will organise panel discussions on the ongoing negotiation processes in Geneva and in Astana. In the afternoon several workshops will be organised by Syrians in The Netherlands who are together looking for a common ground to contribute to peace building in their country of origin. Theme's will be: the war economy, transitional justice, dealing with (religious and ethnic) diversity in Syrian society, local governance and strengthening local communities.
